DECEMBER 27 - 30

Sunday, December 30 - Whiteface
Afternoon Report
The fog lifted, but overcast conditions remained through the day. Conditions deteriorated after noon, due to skier traffic. Slippery sand like snow got shaved off to quite a bit of hardpack remained evident. The steeps got well-shaved, and were hard to handle at times unless you had sharp edges. The best run was Boreen. The machine made snow did not get iced up. Fresh powder would do them good, but the snowpack is very healthy and snow is in the forecast.

Morning Report
Quite mild today. Weather is quite comfortable. Little Whiteface summit is clouded over. Main summit is closed today; however, it should open Monday. Five inches of new last night, so good opening conditions on most slopes. New snow with touches of salt-like snow. Quite nice coverage. Well-covered on the runs I took. Slopes are not overcrowded at all. Plenty of room to enjoy the great outdoors. -Reporter R.B.

Sunday, December 30 - Magic
Afternoon Report
Temps in the mid-30s, sun did not come out much today. Stay with groomed trails. Very hard base with hard pebble snow, some thin areas with dirty snow. Hard to dodge some of those areas, too (Vertigo, Upper Wizard). Hocus Pocus seemed to have the best cover. My legs got quite a work out today.

Morning Report
Temps in the mid-30s. The sun is trying to come out. Would be nice if it did: it would soften up the surfaces. Carving is manageable with a firm surface. Wizard is groomed, but there's a tricky area with dirt, snow and stones. You had to watch out.

Friday, December 28 - Catamount
Afternoon Report
Surfaces undergoing springlike softening as the day goes on. Softer piles putting the brakes on some skiers in areas. There's also some dirt here and there. The terrain park is open  here. These conditions could emerge as the same tomorrow, but what the weather does tonight will have a lot to do with it.

Morning Report
A carveable hard base with a sprinkling of rock salt on top of it. It's easy enough to carve. Well within the "do-a-bil-i-ty" range for most. Coverage gets spotty in some areas. Aside from that, it's fun. Would I recommend coming out here? Sure. Skier traffic is light to moderate. A firmer surface now, but it should soften up as the sun works it.

Thursday, December 27 - Ascutney
Afternoon Report
Conditions were rock salt on formica. The traffic, which was light to moderate, took its toll. It scraped the rock salt off. Lower Exhibition experienced the scraping, with piles of rock salt heaped in areas with formica base showing. It is snowing here now, but it was raining. Unless snowmakers work a major miracle, Friday will likely be the same kind of skiing.

Morning Report
Weather is cloudy, snow showers forecast. Temps will go to in mid-30s from overnight low of 21. Top half of mountain is closed. That limits the challenge. Conditions are rock-salt on formica here. You can easily carve some areas, but it can be intimidating to lesser skiers ... novices. For instance, you have a thick coat of this rock salt, and it can be difficult to maneuver through. Overall, there's some great skiing in southern Vermont, unfortunately, that's not here. Advice? Go elsewhere.

Thursday, December 27 - Sunapee
Afternoon Report
Temps in the 30s and cloudy all day. We had freezing rain. Windy at the top. Snowfall began at 1 p.m. The snow at 4 p.m. is coming down pretty hard now. Sunbowl area was a hard base with scattered topping of snow. Blast-off was the same. Chipmunk had nice bumps and was fun to do. Skyway Ledges, at the top, getting skied off to formica. Snowpeak Triple was not open. But if you come down Westside and pick up enough speed to get up the hill, you can ski those trails over there and to me, it was worth it. It was like having the trails to yourself on Lynx, etc.

Morning Report

Temps in low 30s at the top of the mountain.  It's foggy with mist at the summit. It gets on your goggles, too. Expecting light snowfall later today. Surfaces are nicely groomed on firm base. Moguls will be found on upper Chipmunk. North Peak triple still closed (from Christmas). It'll be closed for a while yet.

Wednesday, December 26 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
While it's packed powder with confectionary sugar on top on most terrain, the diamonds on North Face were like formica. Sounds of skis skidding was louder. nonetheless, conditions held up well with light to moderate traffic. All parks open. Conditions were a dream. Even the diamonds were just about everyone's best friend today.

Morning Report
28 degrees this morning with a deep blue sky and it's very clear. It's packed and sugar surfaces for fast and easy carving. Some bare spots will be found on trail edges. Altogether, though, with light to moderate ski traffic, it's a Can't Miss Day (so far).

Wednesday, December 26 - Magic
Afternoon Report
Low 30s. Snow did not get slushy. Got overcast in the afternoon. Generally, it was fine and fast snow. More runs open on east side. All trails groomed with firm cord, unyielding. High traffic areas were softer. All trails had areas of brown-outs and dirt. On west side, Talisman and Wizard were open. Wizard had best cover, but on outrun, you had to go through dirt. Grooming wasn't the best. Although they do need more snow, I was able to get in a lot of runs. As I understand it, Magic's snowmaking is in need of mechanical help, there's a part they are waiting on. Until it arrives and they fix the snowmaking, Magic has to rely on Mother Nature. Luckily, snow is in the forecast.

Morning Report
Starting out in the mid-20s this morning (projected high to 35) with a sun/cloud mix and no wind. There is more terrain open than I expected. However, conditions aren't the best. The upper mountain has a bit more cover and lower down. They need more snow here. If you have new skis, don't break out to ski here ... yet. -Reporter R.P.
