Wednesday, March 26 - Cannon
Afternoon Report
58 of 62 trails open. Cold start with flurries and gusty winds, but the
winds died down. Wind-scoured new snow from mid-mountain up, with some
drifting on the leeward sides of the trails. Some ice patches popped up in
areas where wind blew snow down to base. Good coverage on most trails, just
an occasional icy patch, like on Middle Cannon and Polly's Extension. Lower
mountain unaffected by wind. Winter skiing now, but plenty of coverage for
some nice spring skiing in the days ahead. 2 for 1 lift tickets every day.
-Reporter M.D.
Wednesday, March 26 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
Beaten by Mother Nature today. Too windy and squally to enjoy my favorite
steeps. Steady summit snow until noon, squally snow showers after that.
Upper mountain picked up 2 to 3 inches of fresh. Stayed on main base
intermediate cruisers that gave a good ride all day. Good late season days
ahead. -Reporter P.J.
Wednesday, March 26 - Okemo
Afternoon Report
Great spring skiing day. After lunch, the sun came out. Conditions
soft-packed and loose powder on soft bases, very easy to carve and ski.
Dreamweaver was my favorite run. In the afternoon, lower trails on Jackson
Gore and Solitude got real soft...on the main mountain too...but no mashed
potatoes. Get out early for the best conditions. Okemo is still almost 100
percent skiable. -Reporter B.C.
Wednesday, March 26 - Cannon
Morning Report
It's overcast with some on and off flurries. The upper part of the
mountain is in the clouds. Once you drop below that the visibility is fine.
There are some heavy-duty wind gusts, depending where you are on the mountain.
You're protected from the wind over by Zoomer, etc. but on the main mountain
and upper mountain terrain, the winds are gusting to about 40 m.p.h. It's
something to contend with. They picked up about a half-inch of snow so far.
It's more noticeable on the front face where it's protected from the winds.
Some icy patches, especially on Polly's extension. Profile is roped off.
That's basically ice all the way down. Upper Canyon is good, but with some
rime ice. Coverage was good on that one though. Good skiable terrain, but
would be better without the wind. -Reporter M.D.
Wednesday, March 26 - Okemo
Morning Report
Nice, spring ski conditions here today from top-to-bottom. It's groomed,
soft and wet packed powder on bases of soft freezer frost. It's very easy to
ski. Nice easy cruising. Even the upper mountain did not freeze overnight, so
it's very soft. And there's hardly anyone here. More than enough base snow
here. They could probably stay open until May if they wanted to. Right now,
there's snow showers. -Reporter B.C.
Tuesday, March 25 - Bretton Woods
Afternoon Report
The sun and blue sky continued. Snow surfaces softened from morning firm
corduroy to dry fast sugar snow. Definitely spring conditions. Excellent
coverage top-to-bottom and very fast. Consistent and carveable surfaces on
intermediate runs. Even at the end of the day, you could find corduroy due to
light skier traffic.
Morning Report
A little chilly this morning with no wind. Zero degrees at the top and
10-degrees at the base. The intermediate runs off Rosebrook summit were
dry, wide-whale corduroy. And from mid-mountain down the sun has really
softened up the snow. It is pretty firm up top though. Perfectly groomed cord
here. No natural in a while, but that's not a problem. There is plenty of snow
here. Superb conditions. -Reporter M.A.
Tuesday, March 25 - Jiminy Peak
Afternoon Report
The day started excellent and stayed that way. Snow softened just enough
into the afternoon to hold very well. Surfaces dampened slightly on all
levels, and was well-distributed with moderate skier traffic. Surfaces Cover
remained more than adequate. Texture stayed fairly fine and still had some
powder content. Jumps and structures are in good shape in the parks. Excellent
grooming, excellent ski day. Jiminy plans to ski to April 6.
Morning Report
A great start here with dry, soft corduroy. Almost faultless conditions.
Texture is fairly fine, fairly powdery re-groom with excellent speed and edge
hold. Nothing but perfect turns from top-to-bottom. After the overnight
freeze, the morning carving was mid-winter, but temperatures are starting to
warm up now. - Reporter P.J.
Monday, March 24 - Wildcat
Afternoon Report
It got to 34 at the base and 20 at the summit. That transformed the firm
corduroy to sugar snow and soft sugar snow from midway on down. The glades
looked sweet, but were way too firm. Instead, groomers were the way to go
today. In fact, it was quite carve-a-licious on all trails here all day. It's
not quite spring conditions but soft and carveable.
Morning Report
Blue sky, and a frosty 18-degrees at the base. Surfaces are firm,
wide-whale corduroy that glistens in the sun. Excellent coverage, side-to-side
and top-to-bottom. Surfaces are still pretty firm this morning. So, it's firm
and fast corduroy, but by noon the sun will soften it up.
-Reporter M.A.
Monday, March 24 - Loon
Afternoon Report
A gorgeous day, that was anything but Spring skiing. It did warm up, but
not like a spring day. No real softening except the last couple hundred feet
down at the bottom of the hill. No softening on upper mountain runs. It
started with groomed powder over hardpacked base. Some ice in areas like Upper
Flume. Big Dipper had boilerplate in the troughs of the bumps. South Peak was
great for cruising on wide, rolling trails. A lot of fun. BTW, Loon is cutting
new trails here for next season. Tree skiing today was well-covered but hard
and glazed over. That was enough for me. But once it gets warmer, the glades
should be very nice.
Morning Report
Sun's out and virtually no wind. Cold today though and you definitely need
a facemask. Summit temp about 10. You can get an ice cream headache if you
aren't covered up. Veneer of grainy snow on hardpacked base. Very skiable,
with great coverage. Off the the new South peak, I'm a little disappointed in
how they cut the trails here. The trails are cut wide, wide-open for
intermediates. Some runs are a bit icy. You need sharp edges. Altogether, it's
a great ski day. -Reporter M.D.
Monday, March 24 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
Surfaces haven't changed much since the morning: it's been great. Nosedive
hasn't been groomed and the snow loosened up before lunch. Some hardpack
underneath. Runs under the gondola were excellent: very soft and very deep.
Upper gondolier had 2-3 inches on top with no ice. Chin Clip was hairy. Not
too promising ... even for experts. Over at Spruce Peak after lunch, I found
plenty of soft snow. Tip: Ski the FourRunner runs in the morning, and then
follow the sun as the day goes on. This has been one of the best ski days of
the year.
Morning Report
Parking lot not too full. Surfaces are very good, especially on the
groomed trails. From FourRunner quad, you can access all areas. Intermediates
have nice corduroy to start. Liftline, for experts, has been groomed, so no
bumps. It's great for intermediates today. Haystack, another expert, was not
groomed and I don't recommend it: it's very hard. Wait until the sunshine
softens the bumps up a bit. Little chilly this morning, but the
sun is out right now. I didn't have a facemask on because the wind isn't bad,
but I do see some skiers wearing them. Plenty of snow up here. This seems like
a mid-winter ski day, more like January than March. -Reporter T.R.
Sunday, March 23 - Butternut
Morning runs were excellent on fairly soft corduroy mountain-wide.
Increasing hardpan as the day went on. Surfaces were dry and fast through the
day. No softening base snow, so surfaces tended to get tracked out with the
traffic. Plenty of snow here. The area plans to ski through April 6.
-Reporter P.J.
Sunday, March 23 - Sundown
Afternoon Report
Surfaces in afternoon were softer. No traffic at all. Some slick spots,
but overall pretty nice. The snow got heavy later in the day. It was springy
at the bottom of the hill. It was a great day thanks to the sunshine and
because no one was here! Very good coverage overall.
Morning Report
The snow set up overnight, it's pretty firm underneath, with surfaces like
ballbearings. Sensation and Big Ben were a little tricky for beginners because
it was a little slippery. Temps only about 20 degrees to start with a brisk
wind. Sunny skies may help to soften the snow. -Reporter T.C.
Friday, March 21 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
Definitely a mid-winter powder day. More than 14 inches of medium-weight
powder everywhere. Upper mountain terrain is now open, but winds are still
strong. Nosedive glades has very good coverage and freshies! Nosedive features
some exposed hardpack and windblown powder. Moderate bumps starting to form on
Nosedive. Overall, a typical mid-winter, stormy, windy, powder day!
Morning Report
It's snowing and it's been snowing all night. Stowe has seen 12-14 inches
of fresh powder with gusting winds to 75 mph. There are windholds on gondola,
etc. So there's no access to upper trails today. Plentiful powder on what's
open. Excellent coverage. Snow density is medium-weight.
-Reporter M.A.
Thursday, March 20 - Smuggs'
Afternoon Report
Madonna 1 ran for awhile and then shut down due to the winds. Wind gusts
picked up substantially this afternoon. Other than that, there's been about 9
inches of snow so far: it's delightful. Everything on Sterling is open and
that includes the woods, which are pretty good. The halfpipe is being recut
today. Temps are in the high-20s, maybe 30. Groomers should be hard at work
tonight to roll it all in. Everything ought to be topnotch for the weekend.
It's setting up to be a great Easter weekend, probably one of the best ones
we've seen in years.
Morning Report
The arrival of Spring seems to have been delayed: surfaces are hard ...
very hard on your knees from all the rain that fell yesterday and into last
night. Currently, it's snowing. Forecasts call for up to a foot of snow. If
that happens, it'll be a fantastic Easter weekend. Madonna 1 on wind hold
earlier today. It's now open. I spent the morning on Sterling and found
the trails in excellent shape with snow on top to grab, but it's still
bulletproof under that. Conditions should improve with additional snow. I
wasn't sure what I would find today, so I honed my edges last night. Good
thing, because you really do need a sharp edge on your skis today. Winds are
pretty brisk at the top of the mountain and it really feels more like a
January ski day. -Reporter D.S.
Thursday, March 20 - Jiminy Peak
Afternoon Report
Not really a fun day to ski. Surfaces didn't change much all day. Winds
were strong. Yesterday's rain did take a toll on the base. Thin cover and bare
spots are sure to appear if the skier traffic picks up. My advice is to check
out conditions before you buy your ticket.
Morning Report
It's a mixed bag here today. Conditions are groomed, but frozen on the
upper mountain terrain. Most of the mountain is shrouded with clouds with rain
and mixed precip. On the bottom third of the mountain, the visibility is good
and surfaces are wet and a little bit slushy, but still easy enough to ski.
Despite yesterday's rain I have not seen any bare spots and only a few formica
patches here and there. All in all, not a real good ski day. I think I'd do
something else. There's almost nobody here. I've never seen it so empty.
-Reporter B.C.
Thursday, March 20 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
Windy. Very windy all day. Temps around 30 at the top and 34 at the base.
But with the wind chill, it felt much colder. The winds were really whipping.
Only Canyon and Ego lifts open due to the winds. The top-half of mountain was
closed with poor visibility. It did open later in the day with the Summit
Express. It was a north blowing wind. We found the North Face very firm and
windy. When we went to southern areas of the mountain like Deer Run, the snow
was a lot better and the winds weren't as bad. When you got to about
two-thirds down, it was softer snow and more springy. Conditions did vary,
quite drastically, from top-to-bottom. Groomers are out working on the snow
now. There is plenty of snow here. They should ski into April without a
problem.
Morning Report
No one here today. No lift lines.
The winds are pretty blustery today. There's several lifts that are on
hold. Groomers are working now, and it's a dry and crusty, broken-up type of
snow surface. It's overcast with some flurries and a bit of rain. There's a
little problem with visibility at the top, but that should break up and clear.
So far, it's fun skiing, but altogether easy to take with the weather-affected
surfaces. The skiing on the Main face is fast and that's fun for me.
Absolutely, you can find something to ski you'd like and the weekend looks
good weather-wise. -Reporter M.G.
Wednesday, March 19 - Magic
The rain is very heavy and the mountain is totally under cover of clouds.
It's just over freezing now. Everything is closed here today. You can't see on
the mountain, it's dangerous, so a wash-out for today's skiing. Now, the rain
is supposed to changeover to snow later today. We'll see how it goes.
-Reporter M.G.
Tuesday, March 18 - Hunter
Afternoon Report
This is probably the best winter ski conditions in the Catskills here on
Hunter West. This side of the mountain has trails like Way Out and Claire's
Way, among other advanced runs. The base snow on the Main mountain area saw a
lot of skier traffic today. Surfaces got skied down a bit with mashed potato
spring snow on the lower mountain runs. The West side, however, has seen less
skier traffic today. These are really good conditions.
Morning Report
A wintry mix predicted later in the day. Right now it's 31-degrees and
overcast. Conditions are variable, with a bit crunch, but well-groomed,
off the summit. There is a substantial base, so they have plenty of snow to
move around. Last week, Hunter got just under a half-foot of natural snow. No
crowds here so far, but the parking lot seems to be filling up a bit.
-Reporter H.G.
Tuesday, March 18 - Butternut
Everything on the left side of the mountain off the quad has enough snow.
Lucifer's Leap is the best run for the diamonds. Everything is groomed out
nice. Not as hard a surface as I thought there would be. There is plenty of
snow. For 20 bucks, you can't beat the price. -Reporter C.G.
Sunday, March 16 - Sugarbush
Afternoon Report
Temps this afternoon went into the upper 30s and brought spring conditions
to the upper trails as well. Organgrinder, off Heaven's Gate, had loose and
fast sugar snow with great coverage. Late afternoon brought low visibility at
the top with some light snow. Overall, it's very sweet, spring skiing
conditions.
Morning
Report
It's a balmy 35 degrees at the base, 30 degrees t the summit. It's a
typical spring skiing day: the upper trails are still firm, the lower mountain
terrain is softening up. Jester, a long scenic intermediate, was firm and
fresh corduroy with side-to-side coverage. Mid-mountain, on down, the runs
have sugar snow in abundance. Spring skiing day for sure. -Reporter M.A.
Sunday, March 16 - Gunstock
A perfect ski day. There's plenty of snow here- on and off-trail.
Temperatures stayed in the 30s today with fog to start the day at the top of
the mountain. Visibility, as a result, wasn't too good off the summit. It did
clear up before too long though. Surfaces were real packed powder, like
talcum, for the morning rides. The afternoon surfaces featured corn snow on
the lower mountain runs. A really nice place to ski and some really good
skiing going on! -Reporter S.S.
Friday, March 14 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
The wind finally died down. It was a mix of sun and clouds today and it
heated up pretty good. I'd say temps in the 40s. All areas loosened up to
famous margarita-type surfaces. The snow brakes started down by the very
bottom of the runs. That's how warm the snow got. We decided to find the
shadier trails. And we found it. The snow texture was much firmer and faster
over at Carinthia on Nitro. Good decision. Just a great day. Tips for days
like this: yellow wax and do not overdress. Also, use Armorall on the top of
your skis. That way the snow slides right off the tops when it gets springy.
Fantastic ski day.
Morning Report
The Main Face terrain is beautiful packed corduroy. It's effortless to
ski. Surfaces are like talcum powder overall. Some squeaky styro to be found,
but the turns are still easy no matter where you are. It's almost noiseless
noise. The North Face snow is crunchier and firmer. It's totally different
because it's faster, too. Surfaces will start to move around, soften and
especially down at the lower mountain, it'll get springy. No one's here! No
lines! It's like my own private resort today.
-Reporter R.O.
Friday, March 14 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
The fog finally let go by the afternoon. Base temps hit 35. A little
mashed potato consistency at the very bottom on the trails, but not anywhere
else. Off Mountain Triple lift, Lord, among others, were covered in a baker's
flour type snow. Double-diamond National and Liftline were a real workout.
Fun! No scraping or scratchy on bump runs. Nosedive was a good cruiser on an
ample amount of snow. The snow was not grabby at all. Spruce was the place to
ski until the fog lifted on the main mountain. All in all, if you're headed
here, you won't be let down. It's in mid-winter finery.
Morning Report
This morning's temps started out at 28 at the base and 20 up top. It's a
comfortable range to ski in. The top of the mountain is heavily fogged in; so
much so you lose sight of the chairlift in front of you. Off the FourRunner
lift, Ridge View was consistent fresh crispy corduroy all the way, as it made
its way into other trails and then all the way down. Double diamond Liftline
and Upper Goat had some formica in the ruts of knee- high bumps. The snow was
a baker's flour type consistency on the tops of the bumps. As a note, not all
these trails have been groomed. So there's areas of fresh uncut snow,
especially on the sides. Doesn't get much better than this.
-Reporter J.A.
Thursday, March 13 - Mohawk
Afternoon Report
All major trails are generally full-width. Skiing was very good after a
full mountain groom. Only one run was closed. Surfaces were corduroy, then
changing over to a moist spring snow. All runs skied well, especially
Arrowhead, where coverage was consistent and generous.
Morning Report
The recent rain and thaw have taken their toll: bases are thinning at the
edges, but generally it's edge-to-edge coverage and a healthy snowpack. There are some scattered, gray ice patches, but grooming is in progress. All
major trails remain open, except for Route 100. Surfaces are mostly
yesterday's skier surfaces, full of ruts and chatter. But, as I said, groomers
are out now. They probably wanted it to firm up before getting the heavy
equipment on it. I expect corduroy to be rolled out shortly. Overall, a rough
start here, but with ongoing grooming, should bring improvement for the
afternoon ski. -Reporter P.J.
Thursday, March 13 - Okemo
Afternoon Report
This was one fantastic ski day. Lots of light loose powder on
easy-to-carve snow. Every ability of skier had a blast today. Good cruising
with sunshine on the lower mountain to make it soft this afternoon. A lot of
skiers here today. That's unusual for a weekday. Jackson Gore softened up
really nicely in the afternoon. Great terrain over here and very interesting.
Tuckered Out was quite long, interesting and fun. Today's skiing was so good,
I never stopped for lunch!
Morning Report
I'm in heaven! It's a beautiful bright sunny day with temps to the mid-30s
(at least). Off the Northstar lift, it's all squeaky, slightly frozen, packed
corduroy on frozen bases. It's beautiful. It's fast. It's easy to carve.
Everybody looks good carving this stuff. The warmer temps and sun will only
make it better as the day goes on. It's not soft packed powder, but it's
great. Sunglasses and sunblock are good ideas today. -Reporter B.C.
Wednesday, March 12 - Magic
Afternoon Report
Conditions were a mixed spring bag. That includes bare spots. Lower Wizard
was almost completely blocked by ice, just a 3-foot swath of crust you could
ski through on the left side. Uncarveable crust started to soften somewhat in
the afternoon. This was true on green, beginner runs. I could only find about
3 runs that were freshly groomed. Most runs seemed to have been groomed the
day before. Had surfaces been freshly groomed, the skiing probably would have
been better.
Morning Report
It's about 23 degrees this morning. The weather is snowy with fog at the
summit. That means low visibility at the top. Skier traffic is very light.
It's still a little cool, so use a gaitor, and keep a face mask at hand.
Refrozen surfaces and a mixed bag of spring skiing. Some places, it is as hard
as a rock, even when you come across snow piles where it froze. But where the
snowcats have been, it's soft and carveable. There are some gray ice areas.
From what I've seen, it can be tough at the top. My advice? Follow the
corduroy and hope there's a lot of it.
-Reporter A.S.
Wednesday, March 12 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
It's been snowing since the morning. There's about 2 inches on top of the
soft, loose powder that was here when I arrived. Skiing was super today. Bases
were semi-frozen. It was easy carving snow that was effortless. These
conditions could be found everywhere, including the North Face. The moguls on
the North Face, however, were solid ice. Sunbowl moguls were icy, too. No
formica anywhere on the mountain, save the top of Upper Exhibition (from skier
traffic).
The skiing was so good that I skied non-stop from the time I got here this
morning. It's fabulous.
Morning Report
Skiing is fast and easy. Starting at Carinthia, skiing top-to-bottom, it's
corduroy and easy skiing off Mineshaft. It's overcast and snowing lightly; a
wet snow. Only a few inches expected. The light is flat, so yellow lenses will
help. No spring sun, but it's a pleasant day to ski. -Reporter B.C.
Tuesday, March 11 - Belleayre
It's a gorgeous, blue sky, sunny day. They've lost some base since the
last time I was here, but loss is marginal. No new snow today. Conditions
feature about a half-inch of corduroy on a very hard base. It's very good for
carving turns. -Reporter H.G.
Tuesday, March 11 - Sunapee
Afternoon Report
Truly a great day of New England skiing: bright sun and temps in the 30s.
It did help to soften cover somewhat. Lots of fast and easy skiing on a frozen
base topped with groomed up powder. The best morning skiing was off the
Sunbowl quad. Later in the day, upper and lower Blast-off was real fun.
Actually, there weren't any bad spots on the mountain.
Morning Report
The skiing is fast and easy and just a little bit noisy. Top-to-bottom,
we're skiing corduroy that is only partially frozen and very easily carved.
It's a bright sunny day with little wind and temps will go into the upper 30s
today. That'll definitely soften up the cover. Sunapee has done a great job
here. It's packed surfaces. It's easy carving. You don't need sharp edges.
It's really a great day to ski today.
-Reporter B.C.
Monday, March 10 - Butternut
Well you know about rain Saturday, followed by the freeze, so the base
snow has gotten difficult to groom. I call it cat litter surfaces. It's icy,
loose chunky snow. The groomed up frozen cover didn't stick to the base very
well, so cover became uneven as the day went on. So a little spotty today, but
I can only hope it improves.
Monday, March 10 - Jay Peak
Afternoon Report
Jay managed to get the tram open right before lunch, and that made for
fun off the top. Regrettably, none of the glades were open: it was unbreakable
crust. However, there was plenty of groomed terrain. Crushed ice and flour
textured surfaces throughout the area that was edgeable, but required
attention. It did require a fair amount of work with your edges. The only
kindler and gentler snow I found was on the green runs like Perry Merrill.
Temps stayed in the mid-teens with sunshine and a pretty stiff wind. Jay
groomers did work hard, but could use some help from Mother Nature now.
Morning Report
Jay is in the process of getting back to normal after severe icing shut
them down Sunday. Temps are in the low to mid teens, with light winds. Metro
quad only thing open as the day began. Deicing is going on now on the lifts.
Groomers have been out to get on the snow that fell after the icing. That's
given us some softer, kinder terrain and easier edging. Limited terrain for
now, making for a bit of a crowd here at the Metro lift. - Reporter J.S.
Monday, March 10 - Killington
Morning Report
What a change! We had a couple of inches of snow overnight and the
skiing is absolutely first-class today. The combination of the new snow and
the groomers have really turned it around. It's bright and sunny today. It's
done wonders for Killington overnight.
-Reporter D.C.
Morning Report
My first impression when I got here was that winter is not over. I
arrived to bright sunny skies and snowfall. Wind was blowing very hard. The
area is definitely in the recovery mode today. Only one part of the mountain
was open today. You were pretty much contained to the main mountain, in front
of the base area. Terrain was limited. Surfaces were basically frozen crud.
The groomers did the best they could. Skiing was very fast today. No moguls
though. I spent more time sitting around on the lifts than skiing, so I left
early and went to Killington - where the power's out in the condo. Bummer. -Reporter
D.C.
Sunday, March 9 - Jiminy Peak
Afternoon Report
Temps got into the 30s with sunshine in the afternoon. The winds were
really strong at the top of the trails. It would blow back up the hill and
push me back. I was glad I had a helmet on today. About 80 percent of the
mountain open with ice on every trail. Lots of crystal pebble cover where it
was groomed. Black diamonds had ice on the sides and were scratchy. I thought
the skiing was fine but could have done without the wind.
Morning Report
It's windy today and cold. Surfaces are hard and fast. Scratchy cover.
They got a late start today since the groomers had some work to do. Off the
top, you really had to fight the wind. It holds you back! -Reporter J.G.
Sunday, March 9 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
Punishing winds and cold stayed all day long. That brought wind chills
into the sub-zero range. It would get you no matter where you skied. I took
the gondola and that was probably the most pleasant ride all day. It was
offset by the ride down. Upper Perry Merrill and other runs were crunchy and
crunchy with the blowing wind. You had to work at it. Some new natural made
for quieter turns on portions of Perry Merrill. Hayride, black diamond, should
be renamed to Hell Run. Bumps on the upper portion had sculpted formica on the
bumps, with some softer surfaces in the troughs as you made your way down the
run. Easier corduroy runs still were firm corduroy (like on Toll Road) and
frozen pretty firmly. Spruce Peak also had very firm surfaces in spite of
getting a bit of new natural today.
Morning Report
Mountain Triple is the only lift online at this time, and it opened
late. Roads in were slippery and snowpacked. The weather is 10-15 degrees with
winds to 35 mph. It is punishing. On the lifts, the chairs haven't been
cleaned off completely. Skiing is firm on moderately edgeable corduroy after
powertilling. It's snowing now. Glare ice with a bit of snow on top of some
runs. It's survival skiing. -Reporter J.S.
Friday, March 7 - Windham
Afternoon Report
Things will change today. It's been warm. Everything mushed up pretty good
today. Big clouds are rolling in. Mashed potatoes and some thinning to be
found. Some wet spots, too. Since the rain is moving in tonight, there's no
night session planned.
Morning Report
Big difference from 2 weeks ago. There is less off-trail snow. Whatever
here is groomed is groomed nicely, then it gets a bit wet later with these
spring temps. Overall a pretty good day of spring skiing. Can tell the
recent rain washed away some of the snow on Wonderama, saw some bare spots
on the right, but left is still well-covered. 30 of 45 trails open and a
really nice day to ski with no crowds and mild temps. Afraid Saturday's rain
is going to wash away even more snow, but if you can get up here Friday,
it's well worth it. -Reporter T.C.
Friday, March 7 - Smuggler's Notch
Afternoon Report
Sun out all day to soften up surfaces. However, intermediate corduroy
trails did turn into skier cut-up and skied off patches. On Sterling, Rum
Runner had crunchy surfaces. Lower Pipeline was on the firm side. It had not
been groomed. Full Nelson was lightly bumped up and kind of slick in the
troughs. Bootlegger, a black off Sterling, had some bumps up top. Then a
section of ice for a long length. Once past that, it wasn't groomed, but held
an edge. The softest surfaces gave way to somewhat spring cover on Morse area.
Some thin cover postings over there. Temps about 40 and a decent number of
people here. It was enjoyable.
Morning Report
Temps started in low 30s, sunny high of 40 today. On Morse Mountain,
power tilled to crunchy, yet edgeable. Same conditions on Midway to Madonna
Mountain, where there was fabulous turning on Upper Chilcoot. Just a light
skier cut-up, but kinder, gentler, softer cord surface. Also on Madonna,
blue trail Dan's Ford had nice cover, a little crunchy, but still carveable.
But definitely check out the top of Madonna early in the morning. -Reporter
J.S.
Thursday, March 6 - Okemo
Afternoon Report
Stayed sunny all day, no wind. Jackson Gore had fewer skiers and no wait
for lift. With temps in the mid 40s, surfaces loosened and softened up a lot
in the afternoon. In Jackson Gore, the texture of the snow was like frozen
margarita on top of a mid-firm surface. Shaded run intermediate Lum Run
stayed firm and fast. So, softer in the sun, firm and faster in the
shade, but no mashed potatoes yet. On sunny days like this, don't forget the
sunscreen and dark goggles. Overall a beautiful day, well worth every penny.
-Reporter R.O.
Thursday, March 6 - Belleayre
Afternoon Report
Softer conditions in the afternoon. Mixed bag of conditions. Upper
terrain was firm. Found untouched corduroy because of light skier traffic.
Double diamond Yahoo a little rough and choppy. Should have brought shorter
skis. Make sure you use the correct wax. Overall, very very nice...softer
lower down, but nice cruising.
-Reporter H.G.
Thursday, March 6 - Mad River Glen
Afternoon Report
Sun all day. Surfaces softened to spring conditions. Porcupine softened
up a lot compared to what it was in the morning. Bunny stayed firm, as it
didn't get as much sun. Fair amount of skiers came out to enjoy the sunny
mild spring weather. Upper Antelope and Catamount held consistency all day.
-Reporter J.S.
Thursday, March 6 - Belleayre
Morning Report
About an inch of new snow at the summit. Gorgeous sunny weather today.
Mild too, with a predicted high of 45 today. Almost at full operation. Warm
and not much wind. Belleayre Run is gorgeous. Very early spring conditions,
a little soft, but coverage is excellent. Wet weather is set to move in and
that could change things. No lift lines, small crowds. -Reporter H.G.
Thursday, March 6 - Mad River Glen
Morning Report
Wednesday's weather, which featured freezing rain, wreaked havoc on good
number of runs, especially the ungroomed. Anything groomed has been
enjoyable. Groomed green trail Fox had a nice corduroy surface, but Vixen
was firmer, with some crunch under foot. Broadway was groomed for nice easy
cruising. Porcupine was ungroomed with some rubble and chunks to watch out
for. On Snail, there was firm, frozen cut-up. Rockefeller was a bit
treacherous. Off the Single Chair, Upper Antelope had nice groomed corduroy
and fairly nice softpack. Most black diamond runs were cut up with a few
death cookies from the freezing rain, but the sunshine and temps hitting 40
in the afternoon should soften this up nice later on. Use caution until
surfaces soften. -Reporter J.S.
Thursday, March 6 - Okemo
Morning Report
Temps in the mid-20s in the morning, look to rise to 40 by the end of
the day. Off the North Express Chair, Timber Lane to Upper and Lower Arrow,
a blue trail with a great view, offered a medium-hard surface, with firm
crunch corduroy. Could hear the crunch over the music in my helmet. Still,
conditions are quick and firm and the edges do hold nicely. There were Super
G races going on this morning and the conditions were great for that, as
they were really working up some speed. All trails open, and as soon as sun
softens things up, it's going to be a great ski day.
-Reporter R.O.
Wednesday, March 5 - Bolton Valley
Afternoon Report
Weather went from bad to worse with more freezing rain and a heavy fog.
Snowflake Lift, which goes to blue and green terrain did fire up late
morning. The freezing rain caused crust to form on upper portions of the
mountain. Almost a break crust surface, frictionless. Navigable on Sherman's
Pass, a green trail. Black diamond trail Hard Luck had a sandy surface,
required weighting. Other trails changed dramatically. Top to bottom found
skier cut-up snow, which made it challenging. Freezing rain settled on lift
chairs, then dripped on skiers below. Things should improve for Thursday -Reporter J.S.
Wednesday, March 5 - Bolton Valley
Morning Report
The overnight weather dropped some freezing rain. That made for tricky
driving to get here. And there's only a handful of skiers here today. Temps in
the low-30s this morning with a mix of sleet, freezing rain and and stiff
winds. Visibility is pretty poor with fog at the upper elevations. Surfaces
are the texture of sand. It's unpredictable and you need to pay attention to
weighting and unweighting your skis. It's a case of real survival
skiing today! -Reporter J.S.
Tuesday, March 4 - Ragged
The rain held off for the most part until 2 p.m. Groomed runs were very
soft, but also very slow. Ungroomed runs were a lot of work, but black Midrock
skied fine. It's a narrow bump run, with big well-defined bumps. Reggae Glades
bumps were not well-formed with crusty snow and were tougher to ski than some
black diamond bumps. Plenty of snow here, and a great ski day, shortened
unfortunately by the rain.
Morning Report
A few drops of rain on my first two runs, but it has stopped. So rain is
not an issue. It's about 40-degrees. Surfaces are soft, uniform, corduroy
carpet. Exhibition, an intermediate, was buttery snow. The diamond
Headwall was groomed so soft, it skied like an intermediate run. So far the
skiing's been great, but my fingers are crossed that the rain holds off.
-Reporter D.A.
Monday, March 3 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
Today's conditions were greatly affected by the changing weather. Before
lunch, we had light drizzle, which quickly covered surfaces with ice. It was
fast and firm underfoot. Just after lunch, temps shot up to the low-40s and
snow surfaces turned to spring-like skiing. North Slope was sun-softened, very
carveable surfaces from top-to-bottom. Upper Nosedive summit access was down
to exposed hardpack and quite fast. However, once you got past that point, the
trail was consistently covered with sun softened snow and it skied quite nice.
It was a good day to stay on the groomed runs, as the moguls stayed fairly
firm until the afternoon.
Morning Report
They've gotten up to 25 inches of snow this past week. 100 percent open.
It's 22 degrees at the summit with light rain. The rain hasn't really marred
the wonderful surfaces and it should move out soon. Wide whale corduroy off
the Gondola on Perry Merrill. Excellent coverage. Freshly groomed, and an inch
or two of loose snow on Cliff trail. Goggles are a must today with occasional
showers forecast. -Reporter M.A.
Monday, March 3 - Jay Peak
Afternoon Report
Very lovely day of skiing. Temperatures got up to 40 degrees today with a
little precipitation that moved through quickly. Today was excellent on all
the groomed. Favorite glade trails included Buckaroo and Bonadventure. The Jet
on the east side of the mountain was great skiing. I loved the Derek Hotshot:
nice curves on it. Tram ran all day today. Snow at the base of the mountain
got a little sticky, so it's a good idea to wax up. Sharp edges were also
needed for firmer areas. And sunscreen is always a good choice, too. An
excellent day of skiing.
Morning Report
A little cloudy. A little breezy. A temperature inversion on the mountain
this morning. Conditions are serious packed powder. You can't make a wrong
move here. The texture of the snow is fantastic. The grooming on Jet, Derrick,
etc. are fantastic. Plant your pole up to the basket! They've got a new
grooming implement this season so they can now groom Can Am. Let me tell you
they are really serious about grooming this season than they've ever been.
-Reporter D.E.
Sunday, March 2 - Sugarbush
Afternoon Report
Most of the upper lifts finally came online early in the afternoon with
a brief respite from the wind, so we could enjoy the 10 inches of fresh, light
powder that fell overnight. Upper and Lower Jester had soft and fluffy powder.
There was 4-6 inches of windblown on the sides. Excellent carveability.
Phenomenal on Middle Earth with excellent cover. In my opinion, conditions
today were the best of the season.
Morning Report
Mt. Ellen and Lincoln peak are on wind hold this morning. Beautiful,
sunny morning but with gusty winds. There was 9 inches of snow overnight. It
was the hurry-up and wait syndrome. Lower mountain lifts are open, but with
considerable lines. Pushover Chute off Gatehouse was soft and dry powder. Very
carveable. Excellent conditions. Sleeper Chutes had moderate sized bumps
covered with soft dry bumps. -Reporter M.A.
Sunday, March 2 - Butternut
Afternoon Report
Afternoon temps went to the high 20s with bright sunshine. Butternut was
in mid-winter shape today. Skiers who were here on Saturday, say today
(Sunday) is skiing even better! Off Top Flight, surfaces maintained well with
some firmer areas and scratch. Very enjoyable. Pied Piper off the summit held
its cover all day long. Snow surfaces were like flour. Nice and dry. The last
drop off Downspout was tough. Stay to the sides. Freewheeler was the pick of
the day. If you weren't here today, you missed a good day of skiing.
Morning Report
Strong breeze, temps in the 20s to start. Early morning snow is glistening
with the sun. The trails are fully dressed out in nice corduroy. Downspout is
bumped up. Ski the tops here. Once the sun works the cover, it'll soften more.
The area is in top condition.
-Reporter J.A.
Friday, Feb 29 - Mad River Glen
Afternoon Report
Blue sky and sunshine all day. No wind. Mild temps. On the practice slope,
here I found medium to moderate bumps on the right. They were well-spaced with
surfaces the consistency of whipped cream. Birdland had softened up and
excellent coverage. Slalom Hill had moderate bumps with great coverage,
although still a little firm, it was carveable. The woods were very good, but
mostly tracked out. No hazards. Still some freshies here. Very light skier
traffic today.
Morning Report
100 percent open with 45 trails. Temp "warmed up" to 5 above at the
summit after below zero morning. Surfaces are dry and firm, yet very
carveable. The sun is softening trails as the morning goes on. Skied
"Catamount" an intermediate trail from the summit. Excellent views. Very dry
and consistently great coverage from side to side and top to bottom. In
"Catamount Bowl", moderate bumps and great coverage. Still a winter
wonderland here after 12 to 16 inch dump on Tuesday and Wednesday. Light
skier traffic will keep conditions great for the weekend, and there looks to
be at least a few inches of freshies for Saturday morning skiers. -
Reporter M.A.
Friday, Feb 29 - Mount Sunapee
Afternoon Report
Virtually the entire mountain was easy carving into the afternoon, even on
the double-diamonds. Sweeter than sweet. Moderate skier traffic had no impact
on conditions. You can see the clouds in the distance heralding the upcoming
snow!
Morning Report
Bluebird day. Cold, after starting below zero, perhaps a high of 22. A
facemask and gaitor day for sure. Conditions loosely packed fluffy powder.
No ice anywhere. "Upper Flying Goose" a black diamond trail had fresh
corduroy for effortless skiing. Same conditions on "Upper Ridge", a blue
trail and "Lower Ridge", a green. All trails open. 8 of 10 lifts running. If
you're thinking of coming up, do it! Sweeter than sweet. Heavenly! Well
worth the 3-hour drive.
-Reporter A.S.
Thursday, Feb 28 - Catamount
The recent rain hit followed by Wednesday's hard freeze, resulted in a
thin, very firm corduroy grooming over a rock hard base for the morning. Even
with light skier traffic the cord broke down very quickly. Skis couldn't break
into the frozen base, but apparently not even grooming implements were able to
do the task. Much better surface cover is likely with additional grooming and
any natural snow we get out of the Friday-Saturday snow that's coming.
Catamount is done with snowmaking for the season. So a little choppy and
chattery today, but it should improve. -Reporter P.J.
Thursday, Feb 28 - Smugglers' Notch
Afternoon Report
Sky cleared out, beautiful day. It's cold. Maybe 6 degrees and even colder
up top. Good day to take one run and go to warm up. I've never seen the snow
like this. It's truly champagne powder and it's everywhere. I've been in the
trees all day. It's been perfect. I'm exhausted.
Morning Report
This is a classic, and I mean classic powder day. There's got to be
probably a foot of snow overnight and close to two feet since it started. The
sky is buttermilk blue and the only thing that's bad, is that it's 6-below at
the top of the mountain. Other than that, this is just incredibly astounding.
I got a chance to go off-trail with some locals and it's great. -Reporter
D.S.
Thursday, Feb 28 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
Despite the cold and the wind, the skiing was awesome. I'm not
exaggerating. The 10+ inches of snow and Mount Snow's great grooming
made it the best powder and packed powder skiing that we normally don't see
here in New England. Friday promises more snow and very cold temps, too. Dress
warmly with gaitors and goggles to prevent frostbite. But the reward for
putting up with the cold is the excellent skiing. Some of the best skiing of
the season is going on now. Awesome!
Morning Report
It's a bright
sunny day with wind chills well below zero.
You must wear face protection to avoid frostbite.
Skiing is fast and easy and very cold. Skiing on fast, squeaky, styro
groomed snow and powder.
Stay out of the strong wind by skiing Carinthia.
Almost no wind here, but it's really blowing on the other (Main) side.
Super cruising. This is the best that it gets in the East. -Reporter B.C.
Wednesday, Feb 27 -Magic
Afternoon Report
Today was definitely a powder day at Magic. The groomed packed powder
trails were a cruisers' delight with soft and squeaky dry snow. Powderhounds
were happy, too. There was plenty of ungroomed. Tomorrow should be great
as the area grooms everything into corduroy.
Morning Report
Skiing is soft and quiet with 10 inches of new, soft, fluffy powder.
Entire mountain is open with skiing on powder on the ungroomed, and soft
packed powder on the groomed. About 7 or 8 trails groomed so far, with
grooming going on nonstop. Skied top to bottom on Whiteout, Upper Magic
Carpet, Wand and Lower Red Line. Gorgeous top to bottom. Really easy
cruising, don't need sharp edges. It's comfortable too, in the upper 20s,
and there's not much wind. Nice day to be out skiing!
-Reporter
B.C.
Tuesday, Feb 26 - Mt. Southington
Evening Report
Area closed for night skiing on Tuesday because of the rain, but could
still see up onto the hill and can tell that snow conditions look to be what
you would find in Vermont at the end of March: granular corn snow.
Area appears to be well groomed with adequate coverage. No bare spots.
There's still snow in the woods. Back to full ops Wednesday.
-Reporter D. C.
Tuesday, Feb 26 - Okemo
Afternoon Report
It snowed all day, probably about 3 inches by 4 p.m. Okemo said to be on
the edge of a potential 4 to 10 inches more, so that will be very nice if it
happens. Fresh snow in the afternoon covered the very few icy spots. Some
crowds, as New Hampshire kids are out of school this week, but there were no
lift lines. With the new snow and potential for a lot more, it should be
superb on Wednesday.
-Reporter C.G.
Tuesday, Feb 26 - Okemo
Morning Report
It started snowing, a light snow, at about 8 this morning. It's really
hard to see anything - visibility is poor. Conditions are typical Okemo: it's
all groomed out and smooth. I was here Monday and it was beautiful blue sky
and sunshine. Quite a difference here today.
-Reporter C.G.
Monday, Feb 25 - Butternut
Skiing was excellent. Butternut got its fair share of Friday's freshies.
It was quiet corduroy in the morning and skier packed and loose snow for the
afternoon. Some hardpan in the afternoon, but not a lot of it. Bumps were
shaved down before the Friday storm on Downspout, but are redeveloping. More
widely spaced. A bit firmer in the troughs. Snowmaking is winding down for the
season, just touch-ups from this point on. High marks today for
grooming, coverage and weather.
-Reporter P.J.
Monday, Feb 25 - Waterville Valley
Afternoon Report
A gorgeous day of skiing. No real lift lines today. Sun warmed up nicely
with temps in the low to mid 30s. Surfaces, as a result, softened up nicely.
Stiff morning surfaces softened up nicely. Good edging, you could really
carve. On the backside terrain, it was softer on the left side of the runs.
The snow almost got to mashed potato as it warmed up. They did open up the top
around lunchtime. Terrain was nice up here. Soft moguls due to the sunshine.
On the lower mountain, Valley Run was in good shape. Some hardpack and slick
spots on shaded areas of the trails. But for the most part, it was all good.
Good coverage overall, just a little sketchy in the trees by lower Bobby's
Run. An awesome day of skiing.
Morning Report
It's a gorgeous day out: clear skies, great visibility, and temps in the
mid-20s with no wind. Conditions are great. It is a holiday week in New
Hampshire, but it's been ski on, ski off so far. Ciao and Boneyard (on
backside) are the only areas not groomed. Everything else is pretty much
groomed out. Lift to the peak is not open. Great snow conditions. You can
really hold an edge. Bumps are on True Grit. Icy in the troughs there. Moguls
themselves are soft though. -Reporter M.D.
Monday, Feb 25 - Sugarbush
Afternoon Report
Conditions haven't changed all that much since the morning. Some icy
spots, especially in shady spots, popped out when they got skied off. Gadd
Peak area was best, especially Spring Fling, which retained deep soft snow all
day. Off North Lynx, Birch Run was best. Sunrise, one of my favorites, had a
lot of bare spots and rocks today. That has to because it gets a lot of sun
and they don't groom. Castlerock had plenty of snow, side-to-side with lots of
bumps of soft snow.
Morning Report
Surface conditions are excellent. Most runs are groomed. Off Heaven's
Gate, it's lightly groomed snow. Looks like a little fresh on it. It makes for
effortless skiing. It's perfect. Your skis just float across the snow with the
grooming. No skiers here today. You can basically high-speed cruise off Jester
and make those nice wide turns. Organgrinder was a little slippery, but doable
if you dig down hard. It'll loosen up as it warms up. Bright sun today with no
wind. Temps in the 20s. It should be really nice this afternoon. My Tip: ski
the groomed first off, and then go on to areas like Castlerock when the day
gets warmer and the snow gets softer.
-Reporter T.R.
Sunday, Feb 24 - Windham
Afternoon Report
The new snow they got a couple days ago (Friday) really held up this
weekend. There were some icy spots, but temps warmed up and really helped to
mellow things out (upper 30s). It also turned out to be a very sunny day, too.
They also helped to soften the snow. Upper Wheelchair got a lot of traffic.
The bumps on it really made it ski like a double-diamond today.
Morning Report
The snow the metro area got (8 inches or so) has really brought a lot of
people back to the mountain. Saturday was real busy. The mountain held up well
then. Doesn't look like much grooming today, Sunday. Temps are in the mid-20s
to start with a light wind and some sun. What's Next is in pretty good shape.
The snow is a very firm, icy base with skier packed surfaces. It's not fluffy.
No more stashes to find here. The half pipe is really getting a workout today:
lots of people. -Reporter T.C.
Sunday, Feb 24 - Ski Sundown
Afternoon Report
Surfaces held up pretty well. Bumps on Temptor had nice tops, but troughs
were a little icy. It is a little shady over here, not enough sun to soften.
Sides were soft on Stinger. Sensation and beginner runs were very nice. Real
nice and soft beginner snow. Good for learning.
Morning Report
Conditions are very soft snow leftover from Friday, when they got 10
inches. Tom's Treat was very well-groomed corduroy and very soft under your
skis. Gunbarrel was very firm underneath. The sun will soften that up later.
-Reporter T. C.
Sunday, Feb 24 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
Sunshine and blue sky made the upper teens at summit feel a lot warmer.
Snow surfaces softened up nicely. Considerable sunshine softened up the
hardpacked bumps nicely in the afternoon. Coverage and surfaces were nice most
of the day. I took the gondola over to Spruce. Taking on Sterling,
surfaces held up quite a bit better, plus the terrain here gets sun all day.
Looks like a mess Tuesday, but all snow Wednesday. So Wednesday and Thursday
might be great skis day.
Morning Report
It's a big, bluebird sky day. Temps are 5 degrees at the summit, and 14 at
the base. Off the gondola, there's freshly groomed intermediate runs with
wide-whale corduroy of sugar snow and excellent, side-to-side coverage.
Partially groomed runs with bumps were still a little firm this morning.
Nosedive Glades surfaces are still soft and powdery after the 4-6 inches on
Friday. The glades are still in pretty good shape, not all tracked out yet.
-Reporter M.A.
Thursday, Feb 21 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
Frostbite signs stayed out for most of the day. It was cold. Mount Snow is
in full winter conditions. Plus, any new snow we get will be icing on the
cake. What I didn't find today? Closed trails or moguls. I kind of miss the
moguls. Over at Sunbrook area, intermediates like Walt's were well-covered.
Easy to carve surfaces with the warm sun. Lots of snowmaking on Bear Trap, but
no moguls on it today. At Carinthia side, no lines here at all. Some
hard-deck, but overall this was the only run where I found those conditions.
The terrain parks were easy to work. The Gut is maxed up. Great. Beginner runs
off the Main Face were all fluffed up. Intermediate runs over here were also
well-covered with hardly any hard-deck. On the North Face, a very hard base
that was very fast. There was enough give though to get your edges in. Ripcord
(double-diamond) is closed. Tree runs off North Face were open - and generally
noiseless.
Morning Report
This morning
the temperatures are in the low single digits both at the summit and at the
base. That's welcome. The views are spectacular, winds are breezy, but higher
at the summit making snow devils. You have to take the frost-bite warnings
seriously. No lines for some reason. Off Canyon onto Standard, it
was frosty cord on the centerlines and fluffy snow on the edges. Piles of
deeper fluff on Exhibition. The centerline was fast and easy carving for
short-linked turns. The area has a substantial base. How's skiing? Short
of getting a huge snow dump soon, I'd say Mount Snow is delicious.
-Reporter J.A.
Thursday, Feb 21 - Cannon
Afternoon Report
A good day to have warmers in your boots. It's cold! This morning's cord
turned into a mix of loose and firmer hardpack. Conditions varied, but were
very good. Zoomer was in tough shape by the end of the day. It got icy.
Profile, a quick-cruising run, stayed in good shape. Not much skier traffic on
the hill, so that helped conditions.
Morning Report
Cold and crisp. It's a clear day. Temps are in the single-digits.
Everything is machine groomed. Cannon did not make snow last night. It's
firm, fast corduroy first up throughout the mountain. Good runs off lower
Canyon and Rocket. The cord hasn't been skied up yet, although on Zoomer, it
seems to be getting scratchy already. -Reporter R.L.
Wednesday, Feb 20 - Burke
Afternoon Report
Temps were in the 20s, but it felt colder with the breeze. I wore
handwarmers. Groomed trails had a hard base. Upper portions of the trails
weren't as smooth. The snow was pebbly. Trails did get skied off toward the
end of the day with hardpacked and formica areas. I liked the groomed trails
best.
Morning Report
Partly sunny and temps are in the low 20s. Icy on the trees. Corduroy on
hard base. Your skis will vibrate with semi-crunchy snow cover. Surfaces do
get softer as you do down the mountain. -Reporter J.G.
Wednesday, Feb 20 - Greek Peak
Afternoon Report
It stayed sunny most of the day. It's been just a great day with temps in
the mid 20s and no wind. It's obviously more crowded, but while this might not
be the largest mountain with regard to vertical, the width of the mountain
really disperses the crowds. It's packed in the base, but you go out on the
slopes and there's no wait at the lifts. Chair lines are moving well
throughout the area. On GP East, it's the least skied. There's no one over
here. Mars Hill is the only run open, but it's beautiful. It's wide with great
views and conditions feature a medium firm base with a thin powder coating. If
you like steep, try Hercules. First off, the view is just breathtaking. It's
very, very steep, but not as steep as Olympian (which was closed today). The
glades were closed so it was only greens off Chair 2. Surfaces here on the
beginners were a bit windblown with areas of formica. The GP original area was
the best to ski with the best snow.
Morning Report
It's chilly out, but not bad with temps about 25. It's a beautiful sunny day.
There's about 2 inches of new snow and it is a holiday week. The good news on
that is that the area opens early. The crowds are coming in (parking lot and
base area are getting busy), but the area is doing a great job with crowd
control and there's no lift lines. Skiing the original section here, trails
like Elysian and Odyssey, surfaces on the blues and blacks are pretty much
identical. Conditions are like stryrofoam, ski edges grip nice and easy. It's
a medium-hard surface, but no relation to formica. Elysian Fields is half
natural with bumps on one side and a bailout on the other. Troughs are a
little slick, so it's best to ski the tops of the moguls. I really think this
area is a diamond in the rough. They do a great job here with snow surfaces
and managing the area. -Reporter R.O.
Tuesday, Feb 19 - Whiteface
Afternoon Report
There's a hard base all over the mountain. It's a snowcat tread base:
wherever the snow has been blown or skied off, you can see the tracks left
from the snowcats. Whiteface summit only had two ways down, including The
Follies. A good amount of base exposed (like 50-percent). Little Whiteface had
similar conditions with a bit more cover. Here the area was making snow. It
was like cornstarch and slower. Fast, sugary snow on Mountain run area; better
coverage than the summit area. I had the most fun off Facelift. Approach on
Little Whiteface was the best diamond I skied.
Morning Report
Windy here this morning. Skiing Little Whiteface, it's easy enough and
nice enough skiing. They are blowing snow everywhere. No bare spots or
brownouts. Surfaces are a dry, somewhat heavy snow on a firm, fast base. Snow
surfaces are easily skied - even lower intermediates would not have a problem
at all. -Reporter R.P.
Sunday, Feb 17 - Otis Ridge, MA
It's beautiful skiing here for all levels. It's excellent snow conditions
for racing, too. The area made snow after last week's rain. You would think
that after the rain the slopes would have been icy. Nope. Quite the opposite.
Other skiers here today call conditions: good, great and nice. It's been fun
on the greens like Acorn and Pony Slope. Squeaky smooth grooming here on
beginner areas. -Reporter D.E.
Sunday, Feb 17 - Blandford, MA
It's a little cloudy, but no wind. Surfaces are interesting. There was
rain last week, but surfaces don't reflect that. All trails are groomed, and
it's wonderful packed powder with about 2 inches on top. It's just excellent.
-Reporter D.E.
Sunday, Feb 17 - Sugarbush
Afternoon Report
Cloudy overall today. then the wind picked up. That closed heaven's gate
for a while. Going down Organgrinder (packed powder), the wind wasn't a
problem. At Castlerock, it's all about the moguls. Great stuff. The top of
Paradise had larger bumps, the lower part of Spring Fling and over off Gate
House Express, was easy going packed powder through the day. By the end, there
was still plenty of snow to edge into with very little scratch. A really fun
day of skiing with lots of packed powder.
Morning Report
22 degrees at the base this morning and it will get warmer. It's comfy so
far. It started sunny, but the clouds moved in. We're expected a mixed bag of
weather tonight. On the slopes, off Gatehouse, it's groomed packed powder. Off
Super Bravo, Spring Fling has great edging on smooth powder. Beautiful views,
too. -Reporter J.G.
Thursday, Feb 14 - Stowe
Afternoon Report
Phenomenal skiing. Velvet surfaces. Excellent coverage. Temps went to the
20s today. Standard (intermediate) had surfaces the consistency of whipped
cream. Hayride (expert off the quad) had moderate bumps, excellent coverage
and very soft and dry powder snow. Skier traffic was very light today despite
the sun and blue sky. Nosedive glades had fresh powder, even after lunch
(untracked!). The front four are open and Stowe is in phenomenal shape for the
weekend ahead.
Morning Report
It is a sweet Valentine's Day ski day with blue sky, sunshine and most
importantly, plenty of fresh snow. The storm left 6-8" of new snow. A chilly
12 degrees at the top of the gondola this morning. Excellent coverage here on
Gondolier. Fluffy, dry surfaces and effortless carving. Nosedive has excellent
coverage on the tops of the bumps and in the troughs. It's a mid-winter
wonderland here with big dollops of whipped cream snow in the fir trees. More
snow expected this weekend, too! -Reporter M.A.
Thursday,
Feb 14 - Butternut
Afternoon Report
Cover
improved through the day with skier traffic. Frozen moguls the only
evidence of the rain on Wednesday. Surfaces were crust, frozen crust and new
snow. The snow actually began to get soft as the day wore on. Bumps will
probably get resurfaced on Downspout with snowmaking, according the manager at
Butternut. Weekend looks good as far as the weather goes. For today, much
better (and consistent) surfaces than I had thought
I would find. The only real negative today? The winds.
Morning Report
An excellent recovery from yesterday's rain. Skiing is very good. Surfaces
are a firm but fairly comfortable corduroy with groomed and new natural from
earlier in the week. Coverage is not really deep, but reliably deep enough to
ski with confidence. They have done some snowmaking in the past week or so.
That probably helped. The wind is up, but we've got sunshine and the grooming
recovery is impressive. -Reporter P.J.
Thursday, Feb 14 - Okemo
Afternoon Report
The weather stayed colder than I expected all day, so the snow never
softened up. It stayed firm, to say the least. It was like skiing on concrete
with ball-bearings on top. It was carvable if you had good edges. The wind
never stopped.
Heck of a base here. Lots of snow. Glades are closed. After the rain,
everything froze up. Otherwise, the whole mountain is open. If the weather
warms up, they'll groom and be in great shape.
Morning Report
Base temp at 20 degrees, but up top it's real cold and windy. Wind right
in your face as you go up the lift. They had a mixed bag of weather yesterday
with snow, rain, ice, hail, etc. All the lifts are covered with ice. Surfaces
have been groomed out, but it's real hard with lots of groomer's leftovers on
the runs. When it warms up, this should loosen up and turn into a good ski day
by the afternoon. -Reporter C.G.
Wednesday, Feb 13 - Ski Windham
Afternoon Report
The rain came down harder in the afternoon and fog enveloped the mountain
as the weather deteriorated further making for a disappointing ski day.
Surfaces on the two groomed runs I found in the afternoon were easier to make
turns. The wet snow was broken up a bit, but it was hardly enjoyable. Taking
East Peak Express to the green, beginner Wanderer and it wasn't as broken up
as others, so it was tough to make turns. Slow going with slush pools on
ungroomed this afternoon. In the past I have skied every trail at this
mountain. Today, I was skiing the ungroomed green trails with the caution of a
novice.
Morning Report
It's raining steadily. Not a downpour, but hard enough. Mother Nature has
not been kind to the mountain with 3-4 inches of sleet-like snow last night,
turning to freezing rain overnight. The walkways and parking lots are slick.
Intermediate run, Upper Wraparound to What's Next? was wet and heavy and I
caught an edge a number of times on the way down. Where there's groomed runs,
you could ski somewhat easy with a little confidence. But the ungroomed runs
like Way to Go were difficult to ski. Watch out for surfaces that go from
groomed to ungroomed. That's very difficult. It looks like boarders are having
an easier time of maneuvering through this stuff than us skiers today. Halfway
down the mountain, I had to take off my googles because the rain made it
impossible to see. I think this ski day is going to be a lost cause,
unfortunately. -Reporter D.A.
Monday, Feb 11 - Cannon
Afternoon Report
It was a cold day, but a great day for skiing. It warmed up to about 15 at
base, single-digits at the top with breaks of sun, then switching back to fog
and flurries. Probably one of the best ski days at Cannon I've had. It's in
really good shape. All lifts but Tramway open. Most runs were groomed. Vista
Way was natural and ungroomed, along with Profile and Upper Hardscrabble. Some
windblown, like upper Cannon and Ravine, with drifting snow. The Front
Five were all groomed flat, including Zoomer. Best glade: Echo Wood glade.
Moguls on Zoomer liftline and baby moguls on Profile. On Profile the blowing
snow was filling in the troughs. Even with the new snow, Cannon was making
snow all day.
Morning Report
A cold one. Minus 8 at the top with the wind blowing and fog on the upper
part of the mountain. It's real flat light. Makes it tough. About 2 inches new
snow overnight and 9 inches in the past 24. A lot of it is groomed. Some
windblown and icy patches on a few runs with plenty of powder on edges. Upper
Hardscrabble was ungroomed and real nice. Middle Hardscrabble was ungroomed,
had some powder on the ice on the tops of the moguls. The moguls themselves
though were nice and soft. That was kind of tricky. Profile getting
windblown with cornicing being created by the wind. Smaller bumps on
Profile. Ungroomed and some ice. Cannon is making snow on a few trails
over in the terrain park and also Missing Link and area off the top of the
quad. Winds are the story right now. It's pretty cold. You're better off
skiing the lower mountain: it's just about all groomed lower down and in
really good condition. -Reporter M.D.
Monday, Feb 11 - Ascutney
Afternoon Report
Surfaces haven't changed much from the morning because there weren't many
skiers here at all. Maybe 5 or 10. Cloudspin, Twister, lower Snowdance all
retained their grooming through all day. Non-groomed experts like Ledges, not
too bad. Plenty of drift snow between the hard piles. In addition the Face had
plenty of piles to easily move around. The lift on the main mountain was open
to just below the summit. The weather was windy all day with bright sun, but
brutal cold. Upper Exhibition had some nasty looking ice flows on it. Very
cold day for this time of year. Good thing? I had the mountain to myself.
There never seems to be anyone here when I'm skiing here. Note: Ascutney does
have a really nice cross-country area. You might want to check out.
Morning Report
Parking lot is basically empty. No one here.
Majority of mountain not groomed. Their grooming reminds me of Mad River,
and they way they groom. One run I took, Cloudspin, is open off the top of
Snowdance. It's a green, but skis more like an intermediate with its pitch.
The mini-ridges on the groomed runs are stiff. There's plenty of snow
underneath. The ungroomed runs have drifting snow between large piles of snow.
The drifting stuff is very skiable, but the piles are stiffer. So you end up
skiing in between them and through the piles, not the mounds. Visibility is
not too good since the sun is behind the mountain. The bottom half of the
mountain is just now getting some sun. You've got to wear mask today. Its'
single-digits and the wind comes up the mountain at you. Pretty
cold day to ski here in February. -Reporter T.R.
Sunday, Feb 10 - Pat's Peak
Afternoon Report
Really a very nice day. We had squalls midday. It was wet, with snow and
rain. That blew through in about an hour. Conditions remained excellent. All
trails held up, like intermediate Duster and advanced Cyclone. Not many bumps
except on FIS and they were kind of icy. This is a really nice place. Very
family friendly area.
Morning Report
About 5 inches of snow and clear so far. Everything is 100 percent and
it's the first time I've seen powder in a long time. No lines. No one here. No
waits. Great coverage. Downdraft is well covered. Looking and skiing good. -Reporter
M.D.
Sunday, Feb 10 - Windham
Afternoon Report
A major squall just came through, it was whiteout conditions, and then the
sun came out with some winds and more squalls are coming in. At one point, it
was whiteout conditions. Crowds for a Sunday have not materialized, so it's
been on and off with the lifts.
Morning Report
Looks like winter is back in the Cats. It's gray with snow today. 34
degrees at the base with a light wind now ... that may change as the Clipper
comes through later. They aren't really making snow here now. They got 1-2 of
snow last night. Base is bulletproof from the rain and the freezing. Busy day
here. Wraparound is very popular and right now it's in very good
condition. Whistler also in very good shape. -Reporter T.C.
Sunday, Feb 10 - Sugarbush
Afternoon Report
Fresh powder got pushed around, but the snow stayed soft and pliable.
Large piles of just about all runs. This made the skiing challenging since
there was some weight to the snow. But if you snow, the good news is that it
was like falling on a soft mattress.
My favorites runs were off Heaven's Gate (Ripcord, Organgrinder, etc.). They
weren't icy and the new snow slowed these expert runs down. Castlerock
was easy to handle with the new snow (bumped up). Valley House double runs
were excellent on Snowball. Spring Fling a little bumped at top, but had
plenty of snow on them.
Morning Report
Parking lot was close to full this morning. The skiing is fabulous!
The area got 4" last night, the day before, 7" the day before ... It's started
snowing again now. It's snowing pretty hard. This is the day to ski the expert
runs like Jester. It's perfect. It's powder, some powder under. Grooming took
place the night before, so there's plenty of nice surfaces. Organgrinder had
been groomed, but there's new snow on top that' s perfect.
Try Murphy's
Glades for lots of variety: trees, bumps, powder. This is a fabulous day. The
snow is deep, not too heavy, but plowing through it all day will work your
legs.
-Reporter T.R.
Thursday, Feb 07 - Ski Sundown
Morning surface was a slightly damp corduroy with high ice pellet content.
But groomed had good depth. Major regroom on Stinger park, so it was closed.
Snow was like ice beads. Loose cover thickened in afternoon but kept good
speed. Gunbarrel consistent through the day Tom's Treat got a mid-morning
regroom. Good. Some flurries in the morning and rain sprinkles in the
afternoon with temps up near 40. They plan to resume snowmaking Monday night.
The recent rain doesn't seem to have caused significant damage. Base depths
look very healthy and they've stockpiled snow off-trail for later use.
Good grooming, good bases and fairly good quality snow.
-Reporter P.J.
Thursday, Feb 07 - Butternut
Afternoon Report
Soft, wet and mushy cover didn't change. Not mashed potatoes mind you.
Soft rain with temps in the mid-30s, so it's pretty wet, but it is skiable.
Morning Report
Skiing is very wet and mushy. All trails are open. All runs have been
groomed. Upper and lower Applejack are soft, wet and slushy snow from top to
bottom. That makes the skiing a little bit of work. Temps are in the mid-30s,
and we're getting some wet snow flurries now, so conditions won't change.
Continued warm temps forecast for up here until maybe Sunday when it gets
colder. -Reporter B.C.
Thursday, Feb 07 - Catamount
Afternoon Report
Well, we've had some precip since the morning. Light rain earlier today
changed over to snow, and some fog. Now clear. Temps have warmed up a bit.
Mashed potatoes at the bottom of the mountain. Conditions are improving: more
springlike now. It looks like the best skiing of the day will be this
afternoon.
Morning Reporter
Off the summit, it's mixed conditions under overcast skies. Around 32 degrees.
It looks like we could get mixed precip through the day. It looks like the
skiing conditions will be a mixed bag today. We have mixed conditions, mostly
machine groomed and there's light skier turnout. There's good, adequate
coverage, however, Cat is losing some of its base. That's evident with a
number of places where you can see skied off conditions this morning. They are
obviously trying to groom it over and around, but heavy skier turnout would be
a problem. The Cat is day and night skiing today. It's probably best to ski
early for the better conditions. It's well-packed surfaces. It's good for easy
cruising and in good shape overall. Lower mountain terrain is getting a bit
soft. -Reporter H.G.
Sunday, Feb 03 - Southington
The parking lots are full, but no one is on the slopes. So you ski
on and ski off. No lines. It's a beautiful day, mild temps, with spring
conditions. Great skiing. Everything is open. All lifts online. The
snow is a loose corn snow. But this snow is dry, not wet. It's spring soft
cover. Nice. The rain on Friday did not hurt a bit. It didn't freeze. No ice.
When you ski here, take advantage of the flex tickets, it's great. -Reporter
M.G.
Sunday, Feb 03 - Ascutney
Afternoon Report
The temps stayed around 40 with overcast all day. Felt like rain, but
nothing really. Gray day. High speed never opened. Snowdance chair brings you
almost to the top. That's fine since there's no one here today. Most
double-diamonds closed. 50-60 percent of the mountain open. Groomed and firm
cover did soften the earlier salt-type snow. Advice: stay on the groomed.
Morning Report
38-40 degrees and kind of cloudy. Surfaces are very firmpack, some
salt-type snow. Some rocks and dirt. The high speed is closed. Can get almost
to summit. Basically two ways down from here, from the top. It's tough to pick
out details in the snow with the flat light. Skiing though, for me, is
terrific. -Reporter B.M.
Sunday, Feb 03 - Suicide Six
Afternoon Report
Partial sunshine and mild weather put a little moisture in the snow and
warmed up surfaces. Snow softened, but the snow got a little heavy. You could
carve it pretty good. Some favorite trails were The Face and Crystal and other
diamonds. Really fun.
Since they did soften up, they didn't get skied off. Greens, the novice
runs, were nice. Skiers here seemed to really enjoy the snow today.
Morning Report
It's cloudy. Temps 31 at the base and mid-20s at the summit. 70 percent
groomed with a few trails that are closed like Standard. It is a little
crusty. Some places where groomer did not touch, you may want to stay off.
Stay on the groomed. Otherwise, the snow is really nice flowing, easy moving,
dry snow that's fast and easy to edge. -Reporter D.E.
Thursday, Jan 31 - Southington
Temps are falling. Conditions are like sea salt.
Easy skiing with few exceptions; however, Dom's Way and Boomarang do have
formica. Diamonds were jewels:fast friendly and fun on Steeplechase and
Tester. Overall assessment? Very, very nice skiing. -Reporter A.S.
Thursday, Jan 31 - Belleayre
18 degrees and mostly sunny at the summit with the snow guns in full
operation. We're looking at corn snow and mixed conditions. It's very slick
and very fast at the top of the mountain. You need to exercise caution.
There's lots of skiers and riders with today's discounted tickets. I can tell
you that one of my first concerns is that there's some very skied off
conditions here at lunchtime. That's due to the heavy skier traffic. Light
surfaces of machine made on a very, very hard surface. Almost boilerplate.
Your edges need to be very sharp. The bottom of the mountain is a little
softer with corn snow at the very bottom of the mountain. -Reporter H.G.
Thursday, Jan 31 - Cranmore
Afternoon Report
Temp is 29 degrees and still sunny with light winds. Warm weather is
keeping the surfaces from getting too hard. As morning cord got skied off, an
icy base was revealed. The softer snow is on the side. Steer clear of the
centerlines. Ledges (black diamond) was my favorite. There was a swatch of
corduroy on the far right, the rest of the run had an inch of powder on hard
pack. It was fast and fun. The light powder covering was sketchy, so not
recommended for lesser skills. Stay to the corduroy for safer skiing. The
Darkside terrain park here is spacious and well thought out. It's big boy
size, not for newbies, and it's one of the best I've been on. Also on south
slope is mellow teleski terrain on Beginner's Luck. It seems designed for
those who are a wee bit better than bunny slope skiers.
Morning Report
Temps in the 20s should go into the low-30s with sunshine for good skiing.
I've never been here during the day. Today I headed for the east side of
mountain (open days only). East slope was very wide intermediate trail and was
fairly soft. Transferred over to Snyder. Not as soft. Yesterday's rain
made some ice (with overnight freeze) but groomers have done a pretty good
job. If the sun continues to beat down and temps go up, it should smooth out
nicely. -Reporter R.B.
Wednesday, Jan 30 - Mount Snow
Afternoon Report
Wow! What a day to have to explain. The morning was raining and surfaces
were not really too bad. Around noon, there was a large clap of thunder and
that shut the lifts down for a time. Back on the slopes again when the chairs
started up, the winds were whipping up, temperatures plummeted, and the snow
started. Furious snowstorm. Surfaces turned into slow speed. By 2 p.m., at
least an inch of snow was on the slopes and the sun was breaking out. Surfaces
were drastically improving, getting faster. Skiing in the newly fallen snow
was amazing. Snow guns were setting up as I closed out my ski day.
Morning Report
Got your wet weather gear? Good. It's raining lightly but steadily. Some
wind uphill. Four chairs online and the summit is closed. The North Face is
closed. Off Canyon Express, Snowdance was crusty on the cord at the top, but
halfway down it was quite enjoyable with soft snow. Choke and Standard were
groomed in a nice state of cord. Quite enjoyable. Most of the main mountain is
accessible today. Another challenge aside from surface challenges? The fog.
Note: Snow has the comp reimbursement program. If you don't like conditions,
you can get comped for a different day. There are restrictions. -Reporter J.A.
Wednesday, Jan 30 - Mohawk
Afternoon Report
It was a strange day here, but things turned out better than I expected.
AM surface was damp and semi-soft. Afternoon surfaces got stiff and bumpy as
temps dropped and things dried out with the help of gusty winds. But the
afternoon was very sunny and not too cold, so it wasn't all discomfort. Cold
temps tonight and a good groom-out point to an excellent Thursday with plenty
of sun. Snowmaking is planned tonight.
Since I was here last, the snowmaking has been impressive. Wildwood trail
is a series of huge snowmaking mounds, and the Timber trail is skiing as wide
as I've ever seen. Bases are very healthy mountain-wide. Today's rain did not
seem to have any significant negative impact. Overall, not the best of days
here today, but the snow pack is excellent and with grooming and improving
weather, one of the season's better weekends could be on the way. -Reporter
P.J.
Tuesday, Jan 29 - Stowe
Morning Report
Clouded up in the afternoon and by noon it started sleeting, some flakes
of snow we got excited about and then more sleet. Oh well. Things got a little
sloppy, so it really made the snow sticky and slow. Nosedive was a little
scrapey at the top, but the good snow on the edges. Glades were pretty packed
out on Nosedive. Annoying slow snow surfaces. You got caught up in it. Off the
gondola, surfaces stayed nice with not a lot of skier traffic. Lower Lord was
very good too. Expert runs (steeper) were kind of scraped in a lot of spots
with hard pack underneath, not much of a surface snow covering. Intermediate
runs were very good. High winds and freezing rain are forecast up here,
so look out for that on Thursday. -Reporter T.C.
Tuesday, Jan 29 - Sugarloaf
Afternoon Report
I can honestly say that this day in the whole month of January has been
the best skiing here at the Loaf. This morning there was an inversion (45
degrees at summit, 25 degrees at the base). At the bottom we wore jackets and
up at the top, just shirts! The grooming was spectacular. The steeps were
groomed. Nitro, too! Upper Nitro was moist and soft. Lower Nitro was firmer
and you needed sharp edges. Sprint and some of the other narrow trails had a
lot of soft snow. Intermediate skiers take Timberline to top and ski
Timberline down to lower Timberline. It was fantastic with packed powder all
the way. Most of the mountain was packed powder. In the afternoon, there were
some firmer spots. Sunny skies this afternoon and a little windy.
Morning Report
Inversion on the mountain and we even saw a rainbow at the top of the
mountain this morning. Most of the mountain is groomed up. Plenty of nice
edging, squeaky cord. Perfect skiing. Probably the best I've had all season.

Reporter D.E.
Monday, Jan 28 - Killingon
I've been at Killington for four days now. There is great skiing to be
had. I think the management is doing a great job with snow conditions. They
could use some help from Mother Nature. There's a good base for coverage, but
the ice storm two weeks ago means it can get down to the ice layer after
lunch. Tree skiing is more tricky, also from that ice.
Lift lines were short over the weekend. There are some new procedures
here: no services at Bear and K1 (formerly KBL) lodge Mon-Thurs., and Skyeship
base is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. BTW, Snowshed is now the new "hub"
for activity and there's free bag check at Snowshed and K-1 on weekends and
holidays. -Reporter A.K.
Monday, Jan 28 - Hunter
41 degrees. Absolutely gorgeous day. Absolutely perfect weather for
skiing. The mountain is in great shape. They've made a ton of snow. Great
coverage here. Some hard pack on Hell Gate. It's a black diamond that sees a
lot of traffic. Take Cliff instead. There's tons of snow on that one. Maybe
the best run of the day. Some hard pack on the bottom. Cliff to 7th Avenue is
beautiful with soft snow. East Side, a marked diamond, skis like an
intermediate and has fantastic snow. In great shape, especially in the
afternoon sun. Terrain park and half pipe are also in good shape. Hunter West,
Claire's Way, was in great shape with loose, super-fine snow everywhere from
the sides to centerline. Glorious.
-Reporter

Monday, Jan 28 - Sunapee
Afternoon Report
Gorgeous day of skiing. Warmed up nicely (mid-30s base, 20s top). Clear
sky. Winds died down after lunch. No liftlines to mention. Ski on, ski off all
day. High speed to summit was online. Homogenous conditions. Powder on hard
pack. Flying Goose was bumped up and bums were soft. Some hard pack in
between. Not evenly shaped though. Difficult to find a good line. Medium bumps
on Liftline, but troughs were icy. Serious boarders on main park on new SoBe
Freeride Zone with the new rockin' sound system. A really nice half pipe and
features here. Some really big jumps. Note: 2-for-1 on Wednesdays and
$39 tix on Mondays. Nice skiing and couldn't ask for a nicer day.
Morning Report
Gorgeous day: sunshine, not a cloud in the sky. Temp about mid-teens. 20
at the base. There is a bit of a breeze, 15-20 at the upper part of the
mountain (without the trees). No lines. Lodge is full (Spruce). However, no
lift lines. Snow conditions are great: manicured, groomed packed powder. Bumps
on Upper Flying Goose, etc. Terrain park is open and the tunes are going.
Moguls are pretty soft, but kind of icy in the troughs in Liftline moguls.
-Reporter M.D.
Monday, Jan 28 - Butternut
Afternoon Report
Skiing stayed good through the day on most runs. New machine made had an
excellent powdery feel. Cover held well on most runs, like Applejack to
Lucifer's Leap. Upper Downspout has not been groomed, It's a pretty impressive
mogul field with bumps about 2 to 2 and a half feet. The field is spaced out
well.
Morning Report
Morn cord is fairly firm, but the texture is very powdery. Carvability is
excellent.
Snowmaking is in progress. Cover is excellent, with no hint of base. The
terrain park is fun and a good challenge. Triple chair opens at 10 a.m. The
wind is up, but sunshine is just now breaking through. Overall, a good start
to this day. -Reporter P.J.
Monday, Jan 28 - Okemo
Afternoon Report
Surfaces didn't change much, although high-traffic areas did get a bit
skied off. Most runs retained sufficient cover with 1-2 inches of soft snow.
Jackson Gore had the good snow before noon. Vortex a little slippery before
the first turn. Big Bang was bumped up. Tuckered Out was the best cruiser with
piles of snow. Intermediates off Solitude lift had soft cut-up snow for fast
cruising and tight turns. Afternoon's best skiing was off the South Face
express lift. It did get very windy today, enough to have to put
on a facemask.
Morning Report
Lot is getting full. Why? Because it's a beautiful day! Perfect weather.
Surfaces are excellent, as usual. Most runs are groomed. Jolly Green, Up and
Low Arrow are groomed perfectly and with the bright sun, it's softening up
beautifully. Surfaces have a nice depth to it as it softens. -Reporter T.R.
Monday, Jan 28 - Sugarloaf, ME
Afternoon Report
Temps dropped to low teens late in the day. Summit closed due to high
winds. Some great trails: Hayburner and Tote Road and Boardwalk and Birch.
Those were in very good condition. Beautiful, gorgeous packed powder on Wedge.
Sunny day today.
Morning Report
Temps in the teens at the summit. Perfect sunny day. It is gorgeous. Just
a bit of wind at the top, but you barely notice it. Conditions are ...
corduroy is tight and silky smooth condition. About 75 percent of the mountain
is groomed, including a good chunk of the blacks. Special Olympics going on
today. Come on out and cheer them on!
-Reporter D.E.
Monday, Jan 28 - Jay Peak
Afternoon Report
Morning was so pleasant. Fog lifted and it was clear skies with temps in
the 20s. The wind wasn't too strong, except at the very top of the mountain.
Snow stayed on the trails. Tram to Vermonter: pretty firm up top, but once
below the ridge it softened right up. Loose snow, dry, pleasant. Timbucktoo
(trees) is pretty well tracked out in the the trees, but soft snow and good
coverage. Beaver Pond glades was more tracked out. Kind of sliding through,
not a lot of snow on that one. Really good snow on upper Can Am (diamonds).
Big soft snow on that one. Trails held up well all day long. They've got good
cover here and have been taking care of it. Note:
the light gets really flat here in the afternoon. Use goggles with lenses
that'll help you pick out your lines.
Morning Report
Off the top, it's soft cord and very light snow. Upper Goat's a little
narrower, twisty and steeper, and had some icy spots. Green Mountain Boys was
perfect: thick corduroy. A delight. Just a dusting new last night, and it is
making for a wonderful morning. It's about 6 degrees at the top with a steady
wind. You lose the wind as you ski down. It's a pleasure being here when it's
not minus 20 degrees. -Reporter T.C.
Sunday, Jan 27 - Jiminy Peak
Morning Report
Mostly partly cloudy, getting brighter and onto beautiful ski
conditions. Several wonderful runs this morning on Lower fox and Exhibition.
These are excellent, well-groomed with building ski traffic. Conditions are
generally very nice with mild temps in around 40 at the base, a little colder
at the top. Two inches new overnight at the top. They've done a great job
grooming, shows care taken to make it a good surfaces. Weekend rates here
today, so about 40.00 for adult tickets. It's a good deal.
-Reporter H.G.
Sunday, Jan 27 - Bousquet
Afternoon Report
It's snowing. Temp about 31. Surfaces are packed powder and groomed. It's
skiing well. A bit slick underneath in spots, but not bad. Even the steeps are
holding on to their snow well. They've got a great terrain park with jumps and
other features. Crowds aren't too bad. Conditions are pretty good.
Morning Report
Absolutely Beautiful. Sunny and blue sky. Surfaces are nicely
groomed, packed powder, dusted with a light topping of new natural from last
night. Mainstreet is a nice easy trail. Steeps are also in good shape with
plenty of packed powder. Note: get to the ski areas early. The crowds don't
come in until late morning or noon. Get here early and you get the best
skiing. -Reporter S.G.
Sunday, Jan 27 - Sugarbush
Afternoon Report
A good ski day altogether. Surfaces changed somewhat since the morning.
Plenty of snow this morning. High traffic runs did see the snow get pushed off
to the sides. Gate Peak area had good cover all day. I think that's because
it's some work to get to it. Valley House double not in operation today. So
Super Bravo lines got pretty long. Best bet was to avoid the crowds late
morning, and stay high up on Sugarbush (Heaven's Gate and Castle Rock). Lines
did subside substantially in the afternoon. Birch run had serious bumps with
plenty of snow on them. Bumps were to the left, the run-out flat on the right for
high speed cruising on lots of snow. Sunrise had not been groomed and it
showed. There was a little bit of straw, bumps, ice domes on the right. I don't recommend
that one until until they groom. That's usually my favorite, too. North Peak
beginner and intermediate runs were good. Gatehouse Quad terrain had some of the
best skiing. Stein's Run (black) had snowmaking on it all day, so I highly
recommend it for Monday. Tip: Take Slidebrook to Mt Ellen. The lift lines at
Ellen are usually better and you can buy cheaper tickets over there (probably
restricts you to that side though).
Morning Report
Lincoln Peak. Parking lot not very full. Surfaces are very good. Took
Super Bravo to downspout to get to Heaven's Gate to get to the top. Heaven's
Gate already getting a little slick this morning (it's a high traffic run).
One inch of snow overnight with a couple during the day yesterday. Organ
Grinder is very steep is very nice from the top. Jester (intermediate) was in
perfect conditions, lightly groomed with fresh snow, especially to the sides.
And there was plenty of coverage. Snow was very soft. Ripcord was not groomed
(double black). Nice patches of powder between the bumps. -Reporter T.R.
Saturday, Jan 26 - Blandford
Afternoon Report
It's been getting colder as the day goes on. It's cloudy, but visibility
is not bad. Surfaces holding up very nicely with packed powder. Easy skiing.
No ice. Terrain park is good, as well as the diamonds and easy cruisers.
Everything is very well groomed. Lots of fun and no waits at the lifts.
Morning Report
Overcast. Cloudy. The snow is actually very good: it's so cold, the snow
is very dry. Not a lot of depth to the snow, but skiing is good. 95 percent
skiable. Very good skiing. The black diamonds (Chute) very nice. Down main
trails (Blues) skied very nice too on Lower Broadway, etc. If you've never
been here, it's bigger than it first looks. There's specials and events, too.
You'll really enjoy the skiing here, it's like stepping back in time.
