Ski Watch Reporters Bob and Mark skied at Whiteface in the Adirondacks of New York on Wednesday, March 3. Here's what they had to say about their ski day:

The adrenalin started pumping as soon as the mountain’s white capped peak came into view soon after we exited off I-87 at about 8 a.m.. We knew then and there that it was going to be an outstanding day, with early spring conditions.

We also knew that the mountain had seen close to 3 feet of powder over the last week, so the stars were definitely aligned.

The weather was great; it eventually warmed up to 34 at the base, 30 mid-mountain, and 28 at the summit. There was hardly any wind (unusual for this mountain) so, it felt considerably warmer.

All 9 lifts were turning and all 88 trails, with the exception of Upper Northway, were fully open on a primary surface of packed powder and a secondary surface of loose granular. The granular and mashed potatoes were mostly evident on the lower half of the hill as the day warmed up.

Coverage was complete on the snowmaking runs, as well as the vast majority of the natural, un-groomed runs.

The exceptionally picky skier might have noticed the odd bare spot at the very top of a couple of black diamond trails off the Summit Quad Chair- for example, Cloudspin- but otherwise, coverage was complete.

Slides 1 through 4 were also open; however, by the time we got to them, we were just too skied-out to take them on. From all reports, the slides were in very good shape, with some exposed terrain, kicked up by skier traffic, but there are plenty of alternate routes to ski around them.

Cloudsplitter was named run of the day, and we whole-heartedly agree- although, the impeccably groomed Mountain Run, off Whiteface Summit was a close second for us and our unofficial guide Andrew Ritchie from Ottawa Ontario. If you're into GS and cruising, this is your best bet.

Skier traffic was light, with no line-ups at any of the lifts. Quebec families are on spring break, and that accounted for most of the skiers.

In short, Whiteface Mountain offered up an outstanding day of skiing and we can’t wait to do it all again.
