Ski Watch Reporter Jennifer was out catching snowflakes on her tongue Thursday night, January 19 at Mount Southington

A solid spell of snowmaking this week has just about all trails open there.  The only thing left off line is the short, intermediate turn off, “Turkey Turn.”  (It’s covered with machine made and just needs a groom.)

Jennifer was impressed with all the open terrain and its condition, considering the lack of natural we’ve had.  She said the coat of fresh from yesterday’s snow-fall, topped off the trails nicely, and conditions are looking and feeling a little more like they should at this point in the season.

There were a few scratchy, icy patches in the higher traffic areas, like just off the “Avalanche” triple where skiers and boarder funnel onto intermediate “Steeplechase.“  However, Jen said that if you stay more to the sides of the trail, you’ll find no such problem.

Her pick of the day, was expert, “Tester” a narrow, pitchy trail off intermediate, “Lift Line.”  Jen thinks it’s the best run at the area, and was psyched to see it opened for the season.

Looking for a fun night out with friends?  This Saturday evening, 1/21/12, build up a thirst getting some runs in on the 4-6 inches of predicted fresh, before heading into Mount Southington’s Alpine Eatery for some après ski action.  The bar will be open, with cool refreshment on tap and live music featuring Party of Three from 8:30 to 10:30pm.

And on Sunday, January 22, Mount Southington will hold a National Safety Week poster coloring contest!!   All entries receive a complimentary hot cocoa.
