Ski Watch Reporter Terry skied at Ski Butternut in the Berkshires of Massachusetts on Wednesday, January 25. Here's what he had to say about his ski day:

Arrived about 9:30 a.m. and the temp on my car was close to freezing. It was grey with only a slight wind and basically stayed that way all day.

According to the office and trail map all trails were open. Kept to the trails off the Top Flight Quad during the day (passed on the Overbrook Triple, plenty to ski on the Top Flight side).  Top to bottom on Top Flight took 10 minutes.

Snow on “Apple Jack” and “Hobnob” trails were frozen mashed potatoes.  Found better snow on “Pied Piper” and “Nut Hatch” (more of a pulverized ice type of deal but carvable and better than the mini frozen meat balls on “Apple Jack” and “Hobnob”.  The latter was the best sequence of runs.

It's no secret that this has been a "horrible" season this year. The last snow they got at the mountain was last Saturday (1/21) and they got some rain early this week.

They have been keeping snow on the trails as best they can, however there are some icy spots and some bare spots on the edges of some of the trials.

According to the staff they will do the best they can, but really need a snowstorm or colder temps for snowmaking for the busy President’s Day weekend.

Bottom line is Ski Butternut a nice family mountain. Equipment and lifts are dated but prices reasonable.
